I wanted to give this post a special beginning… something to do justice to the movie but then I had to settle for something just as how the movie was – A clean, crisp very well written and even better conceived!! DOR is a story about 2 women – Meera (Ayesha Takia) and Zeenat (Gul Panang) both, as diverse in thoughts and approach as the worlds they live in, brought together by fate. It starts of with 2 parallel worlds – the beautiful mountain country of Himachal, abundant in all aspects and completely opposite to it the dry, dusty dunes of Rajasthan. And as the story unfolds with both these parallel lives of these two women, coming and meeting as though defying all laws of mathematics. Meera’s husband Shankar and Zeenat’s hubby Aamir are both roomies in Saudi Arabia where both of them have gone to change the fortunes of their families and the ones they loved and left back home. News comes back that Shankar is killed and the blame falls on Aamir who is given the death sentence for his alleged involvement given the circumstantial conditions! Zeenat’s only hope of saving the one she loves is to find the widow of the man her husband has allegedly killed and seek her pardon (which according to Saudi laws would set her husband free). What happens after that is for you guys to watch and find out.
DOR has got to be Nagesh’s coming of age movie. Easily his best till date his DOR is a story of love, loss, friendship, hope and ultimately redemption. The movie scores on so many levels – The rustic locale of Rajasthan captured in its sandy best (credit to art: Muneesh Sappal) … its roller coaster ride of human emotions.. heart wrenching background score and superlative performances from the leads and a good story to wrap all of this. The movie is peppered with a rich dose of light moments courtesy Behroopiya (Sheryas Talpade) - a conman turned guiding angel who helps Zeenat get to Meera. Now here’s a gem of an actor. His mimicry of various actors along with is comic timing to situations ( “ … vichaarsheel uunth hain .. ” ) makes him leave a distinctive stamp on an otherwise woman dominated subject. He really impressed me!
DOR may be another ‘multiplex’ movie which may win many awards but unfortunately may not get the box office clinging! Its simplicity (I have not seen a no glamour overkill like this in some time. Ayesha’s looks cute..Gul fitted her character pretty well and Shreyas was a true chameleon! ), character detailing and script is impeccable. Way to go Kukunoor. Unlike his Bollywood counterparts Kukuunoor has something they can only aspire to have – creative genius. DOR rekindles faith in Indian Cinema and is a must watch. I would like to round of the post with some heart warming info. Apparently it’s a take off from a Malayalam movie
enjoy DOR folks!
